Weight Technology Dynamic Axle Weighbridges

Some vehicles have compensating suspensions (tri-axle trailers, 4 axle rigids etc) which will transfer weight between themselves in response to the vehicle stopping and starting. The only means of accurately determining the load applied to each axle is to weigh the vehicle in motion at low speed on a dynamic axle weighbridge.

Dynamic weighbridges are widely used by the Department of Transport for axle weight enforcement throughout Britain and provide axle and gross weights for vehicles of all types. The vehicle is weighed in motion at a constant speed of up to 2.5mph, to avoid the weight transfers caused by stopping and starting. This necessitates perfectly flat concrete approaches either side of the weighing platform.

Typical users other than law enforcement include breweries and supermarket distributors who operate considerable numbers of articulated vehicles carrying a mixture of products and who want to get the load distribution correct.

Static Axle Weighbridge

Two axle vehicles have no compensating mechanism to transfer weight and can thus be weighed statically on an axle-by-axle basis. A Single Axle Static system can thus be used for these applications. Typical users include public utilities or secondary distribution companies operating vehicles up to 18 tonnes.

Full Size Weighbridge

The only application that requires a full size weighbridge is one where an invoice is being raised using the weights produced as the basis for calculating payment. The vehicle is weighed in one go and a very accurate measure of gross and net weight can be obtained. Full sized weighbridges must be incapable of being affected by external influences and thus they are often restricted in terms of external devices to which they can be connected.


Full size weighbridges are not capable of accurately measuring axle weights as they arrive at the axle weight by subtraction. For instance, if a vehicle weighs 32 tonnes and one axle is driven off the plate, the machine may show 26 tonnes and thus assumes the axle removed weighed 6 tonnes. Given the weight transference problems which are introduced by compensating suspensions, this method can never be accurate as the machine will always produce a final axle weight that ensures all the axles add up to the total.

Any trade system must use load cells and instrumentation that has been approved by National Weights and Measure Laboratory as fit for trade so that Trading Standards can test it and stamp it.

Dynamic weighbridges have been approved by NWML recently but the accuracy of gross weighing will never be as good as for a full size weighbridge and generally it is thought that if cash is changing hands then the full sized bridge is the preferred option.

Portable Weighpads

Portable weighpads are best used by operators of two axle rigid vehicles, although they can be used in groups to weigh compensating axles together to avoid weight transference difficulties.

A certain amount of physical effort is required to use weighpads and the very best applications are those where a transport manager is responsible for a number of depots and wants to do spot checks. He can keep the weighpads in his car and if he suspects a vehicle to be overloaded, he can instantly weigh it.


On-board Weighing

Equipment is being fitted more and more to the vehicle to maximise payload, monitor stock control or ensure legality. Various types are offered from low cost systems which monitor the vehicle suspension to full load cell based trade approved units.

The systems that measure suspension deflection are not true weighing machines but are very effective at preventing overloading. They are not expensive and can be fitted to the vast majority of vehicles. Users include local authorities, utilities or any company whose vehicles load away from a central base.

Load cell systems are widely fitted to tipping vehicles and in addition to preventing gross overloads they provide a very accurate measure of payload. This can be essential for reducing the number of trips a vehicle has to make during a day. A recent innovation has meant that front and rear split can be calculated accurately thus preventing axle as well as gross overloading.

Load cells are being increasingly fitted to other vehicles where monitoring of payload is essential. County Council gritting vehicles for example may have to provide a printout to prove to District Councils that a certain amount of salt had been spread on a certain road.

Another recent innovation has seen the introduction of load cell based systems that can be approved for trade. This means that the vehicle can be a mobile weighbridge, issuing an invoice straight from the cab. Potential users of this system include animal feed suppliers, who may be splitting full loads between more than one customer

There are many variations on the basic themes described above and many optional extras can be added to a system to enhance its operation. Automatic vehicle ID, computer links, external displays and printers to name a few.
